Bloomfield College
Center for Technology + Creativity
To house the College’s vibrant Creative Arts & Technology program, the project transformed three separate buildings into a building focused on providing a collaboration-based environment for a diverse set of disciplines. The project involved significant alterations, an exterior restoration of a historic building and an addition. The placement of this new facility is a key element in creating a new Quad (design to be implemented later) from underutilized space located in the rear of the project. Sound isolation and acoustical measures were implemented to create the proper environment for programmed uses.
Design Challenges
- Transform three separate buildings with varying floor elevations into one facility
- Address the diverse program needs within existing structures
- Respect the Historic Club Building
- Optimize acoustical environments with a wide spectrum of program requirements
- Create and enliven a New Quad from underutilized land in project’s rear yard
Design Approach
- Create a strong visual axis from Street Entry through the building
- Locate Stair and Elevator to respect the Club and address varying floor elevations
- Provide wide hallways with display space to show work and foster interaction
- Incorporate ‘Meeting Tables’ in studios to facilitate interaction and discussion
- Introduce a ‘Green Facade’ to unify elements of the building
- Enliven the New Quad with a new entry, a ‘Green Facade’ and lots of visibility into the building
- Provide terraces for outdoor studio work and outdoor performances
